Chateaux & Champagne
Stay in the centre of Reims; enjoy a guided tour of the city including the cathedral; a champagne cellar visit with guided tour and tasting; visit the Chateau de Condé, enjoy a cheese farm visit, chocolate makers, and visits to the fortified towns of Laon and Cambrai.
- Day 1
- Channel crossing and drive through northern France, perhaps stopping at the fortified town of Laon en route. Laon has a rich architectural history and is the largest protected heritage centre in France. Continue to Reims for early evening.
Dinner in or near your hotel.
- Day 2
Get your bearings with a panoramic guided tour of the city of Reims, including a visit to the cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic cart, followed by free time to explore.
Late afternoon, join the coach for a short drive to Caveau Champagne Lallement (or similar) for a train ride with commentary around the vineyard, followed by presentation of the champagne growing process and tasting of that exquisite bubbly.
Return to hotel for overnight stay.
- Day 3
- Full day excursion of the Champagne region. First, a guided visit of an artisan chocolate producer - of chocolate champagne corks! Then free time for lunch in Epernay, the capital of the champagne region.
Afternoon river cruise with commentary on the River Marne from Cumières, just west of Epernay.
Return to Reims for the evening.
- Day 4
- Morning excursion to visit Chateau de Condé, from the Renaissance period, near the town of Chateau Thierry.
Afternoon at leisure in Reims.
- Day 5
- Depart Reims for the journey home. Stop near Cambrai for a visit to a cheese farm producing the local Tome de Cambrai. Perhaps spend a while in the fortified town of Cambrai itself for lunch before continuing to Calais.
Late afternoon Channel crossing and return to local area.
